Firefighters Gain Upper Hand on Silver City Fire
SILVER CITY, NM - Evacuees that have sought refuge at the Grant County Convention Center since Monday afternoon have been allowed to return home.
Over 100 Silver City residents who stayed in the emergency shelter overnight anxiously awaited news of their homes on Tuesday.
The evening before, residents of Quail Ridge, McKinney, Ridge, Filaree, and Rosedale roads and Fairway Drive were told to evacuate their homes. By 6 p.m. Tuesday, a little over twenty-four hours later, the ban was lifted.
At this time no structures are considered threatened; it's a big change from early Tuesday when over 500 structures were dangerously close to the shifting flames. Still, 12 houses and around 60 outbuildings, mostly sheds, were either destroyed and damaged.
State Forestry spokesman Dan Ware said the fire has burned nearly 1,800 acres, or almost 3 square miles. Although the fire by Tuesday evening was considered 20 percent contained, he says crews aimed to have the fire completely contained by Wednesday evening.
