SAN ELIZARIO — A fire destroyed a home and damaged a mobile home in San Elizario Sunday afternoon.
The fire started at approximately 2 p.m. at the 1600 block of Catalonia Drive after a man was burning weeds and didn't completely put out the fire, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
"The flames were really high on top of the house so we knew something was really bad," said Sam Almanzar, who was at a cookout a few houses down.
The afternoon winds spread the fire to a vacant mobile home toward the back of the property.
Nobody was injured but two firefighters were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation and exhaustion.
The home was almost a total loss and the mobile home was badly damaged. The two adults and 6-year-old child living in the home will be receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
Charges are pending for the man believed to have started the fire.
