A letter of resignation fron Fire Chief Otto Drozd announced his plans to depart the El Paso Fire Department effective Nov. 23.

The Chief said he planned on returning to his home state of Florida as Fire Chief of the Orange County Fire Rescue Department, which oversees the largest county in Florida, including Orlando and the Disneyworld complexes.

“Chief Drozd has elevated the professionalism of the department and we wish him much success in his new role in Orlando, Florida,” City Manager Joyce Wilson said.

According to fire officials, Chief Drozd confronted many challenges including a shortage of paramedics, excessive sick leave usage, delayed capital replacement, and providing for the growth within the City. The department said that under his leadership,  it has met the challenge by increasing the number of paramedics by approximately 35 percent thus increasing patient care and allowing for greater survivability.

Unfortunately this is what happens when we hire from outside of El Paso. Why do we not hire from within, train & plan for the future so that we can hire people that want to live, work & stay here. Chief Drozd came here in 2009 & is leaving in 2012. I wish him the best but did he mention that he was going to keep looking for better opportunities outside of El Paso when he was interviewed? He came from Florida & is leaving to go back to Florida. Hire and promote from within El Paso.
