Fire Breaks Out at Las Cruces School

UPDATE:  2:30 p.m.  Arson is suspected in a fire that burned a portable classroom at Mayfield High School this morning.

The Fire Department was dispatched just after 5:30 a.m. Thursday to Mayfield High School for a report of a commercial structure on fire. First arriving crews found heavy smoke coming from an area of the high school campus where the portable classrooms were located. Crews made a quick attack on the structure and contained the fire to a single structure.

Damaged contents include diagnostic equipment, several engine blocks, desks and educational books and supplies. Total damages are estimated at $75,000.

No one was hurt.

LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces School District and fire department are investigating an early morning fire.

Flames were reported in a portable building behind the auto mechanics building at Mayfield High School shortly before 6:30 this morning.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.
