El Paso, TX (KTSM) — The father of a Chapin High School football player died in a weather-related crash while traveling to the playoff football game against Amarillo. Two other victims also died in the crash.
A friend of Chapin Senior Elijah Perales posted on Facebook that Perales' father passed away in a crash.
According to KAMR-TV, the NBC affiliate in Amarillo, the crash happened just before midnight on I-40 in Oldham County near Vega. Witnesses said the road was iced over at the time of the wrecks. The crash started when two tractor trailers collided, causing a chain reaction. A total of nine tractor trailers and two other cars were involved.
Perales' father was in one of the cars involved in the crash. A person in the second car also died, and the third victim was the driver of one of the tractor trailers who was hit by a car when he stepped out of his big rig following the crash.
El Paso Independent School District Spokesperson Renee De Santos said the district has decided to postpone travel for both Chapin and Bowie football players, band, and staff until Sunday when road conditions are better.
Ysleta Independent School District officials have also confirmed that Del Valle's football team will remain in Odessa overnight due to road conditions.
EPISD Superintendent Juan Cabrera released a statement that read, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of the parents of one of our Chapin High School students. Our thoughts are with the family during this time of sorrow and we pray for the recovery of the family members who remain in the hospital."
De Santos said grief counselors will be available when students return on Sunday.
