Signal Fire has burned 2,700 acres in Gila National Forest

Strong winds Sunday fueled a large wildfire in the Gila National Forest near Silver City, New Mexico.

The Signal Fire started about 3 p.m. Sunday and burned more than 2,700 acres by nightfall.

The fire is threatening homes and buildings in the area.  Some residents have evacuated.

A portion of Highway 15 near Silver City from Mile Marker 2-26 is closed, according to the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

Calmer winds are expected Monday, which is expected to create more favorable conditions for firefighters.
