Fans Rally in Support as Aggies Depart for NCAA Tournament
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Hundreds of fans cheered on the New Mexico State Aggie men's basketball team as they departed for the NCAA Tournament Tuesday morning.
The Aggies are making their second tournament appearance in the last three years. Expectations for the team are running high.
"We got a group of kids that understand this is a golden opportunity, so we're looking forward to giving them the opportunity to shock the world as they say," said Coach Marvin Menzies.
As players and coaches loaded onto charter buses, fans gave them high fives and wished them well on their journey to Portland, Oregon to face the Indiana Hoosiers.
Freshman Guard Daniel Mullings knows how big this opportunity is to get NMSU on the map.
"It's big, it's a big chance or our school and it's big for our program," Mullings said.
Before the team departed, Coach Menzies took a few moments to thank the crowd for their support and even joked about taking some New Mexico chile for Indiana star center Cody Zeller.
Senior Forward Wendell McKines also acknowledged fans thanking them for coming out and predicting a good game on Thursday.
The Aggies take on the Hoosiers Thursday night at 7:45pm.
