Las Cruces Fire Department responded to an attic fire in a central Las Cruces neighborhood early on Independence Day.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 200 block of West Chestnut Avenue around 11:30 a.m. after the homeowner discovered that his attic was on fire. Firefighters encountered heavy smoke conditions on arrival but were able to control the fire within twenty minutes.

The homeowner told fire investigators that he was on the roof of his home, using a torch, when he accidentally ignited the insulation in the attic. Everyone was able to evacuate the home without incident.

Fire investigators determined that the cause of the fire was accidental and the home's damages had not yet been accessed in order to determine a dollar value. The attic sustained heavy fire damage and the inside of the home sustained smoke and water damage.

One person was treated on the scene by medical personnel and no firefighters were injured in the incident.
