The Denver Police Department ruled the death of a Canutillo woman and her two children as a murder suicide.

In a press conference Thursday, Commander Ron Saunier of the Denver Police Department said Mayra Nuñez, 23, of Canutillo, Texas, shot her three children: Nevaeh Morales, 4, Isabelle Perez, 2, and Erick Perez, 1.  Isabelle was the only survivor.  Doctors say she is critical, and is in a coma in a Denver hospital.

Family members gathered at the Nuñez family home in Canutillo to console each other, and try to make sense of the terrible tragedy.

On Wednesday morning, Liliana Castro, Mayra's sister, received a phone call from Ricky Perez, Mayra's husband.

"He called me to say that he found my sister and my nieces on the floor. I asked him what happened, and he just told me that they're dead," said Castro.

Although police ruled it a murder-suicide, some members of Mayra's family are not convinced.  Mayra's father, Antonio Nuñez, said he doesn't believe his daughter was capable of such a crime.

"It's hard for me to believe that she could have fired a gun four times.  If you ask me, I don't think she did it," said Antonio Nuñez.

According to the family, two guns were used, but apparently only one was found.  Denver police did not confirm that information.

"I really don't want to go into a lot of details about what was going on.  We do know that the father left for the evening, returned home and  he is the one that made that phone call to us," said  Commander Saunier.

Family members described Mayra as a happy, loving person.

"She was my best friend. She was a great mother, a great sister, a great friend," said Sandra Nuñez, another of Mayra's sisters.

Funeral services for Mayra, Nevaeh and Erick will be held in Las Cruces, and they will be buried in Anthony.

Sandra Nuñez created an account at GECU in El Paso to help with funeral services.  The account number is 5-9-3-7-1-4.
