Friends and family said their goodbyes on Friday night to a Las Cruces soldier killed in Afghanistan.
38-year-old Staff Sgt. Israel Nuañes was killed earlier this month after being hit by an explosive.
There wasn't a dry eye in the house when friends and family told everyone that Nuañes died a hero.

"I wonder if you know how many lives you have touched. I’m hoping you will hear the voices crying out to you, saying we love you so much,” said Junior Cavales.
Family members told heartfelt stories about a man they say was kindhearted and brave.
The mother of Nuañes' two children fought back tears.
"Israel you came into my life 20 year ago like a whirlwind. Much as you approach a lot of things in life, with that fast and furious way of yours, our lives began. The two greatest blessings that you left behind are your children,” said Nuañes’ former wife Laura Gonzales.
The soldier's children are now left with the reality of growing up without their father.
"You are not going to be there for all of their first milestones that they are about to experience as young adults. We had so many hopes and dreams for our children, and I promise you that I will always do my best to guide them,” said Gonzales.

Nuanes' current wife arrived to the funeral riding her late husband's motorcycle because they say his biggest passion in life was riding his Harley Davison.

People who didn't know the soldier came to show their support.
Pamela Dickson says her son is in Afghanistan, and this Memorial Day weekend, we should remember those who have given their lives.
"The entire country has a three day weekend this weekend because of young men like this, and they need to be honored and remembered and they are our heroes,” said Dickson.
