EL PASO — It's been nearly a week since a house fire in the lower valley claimed the lives of two people. Loved ones gathered on Tuesday to remember one of the victims.
"The family is devastated... more united, everybody is closer than ever," said the victim's nephew Omar Campos.
"What can I say. I lost two family members, two close family members, my grandmother and my dad," said the victim's son Esteban Contreras.
The family of 51-year-old Rito Contreras was devastated.
Contreras died in a house fire last Wednesday. Family and friends gathered for a rosary at Hillcrest Funeral Home to remember their loved one.
"He helped a lot of people with his heart. He was a great person in this world. He was everything for me. He was everything for everyone else. Everybody you ask, they would say the same thing," said Esteban Contreras.
Investigators said a short in a lamp started the fire at the home on Sequoia. Contreras and 78-year-old Maria Concepcion Macias De Guererro were killed. Two young children survived.
Contreras' nephew said his uncle was a caring man who loved to do one thing.
"Being around his family, being around his family, meant most of all," said Campos.
Contreras had a 8 brothers and sisters, a big family for a big heart.
The funeral for Contreras will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The family held services for Macias De Guererro this past weekend.
They're having a tough time paying for the funerals so they are asking for contributions. They have set up an account at GECU. The account number is 447375.
