EL PASO (KTSM) — A family is trying to pick up the pieces after a fire ripped through their East El Paso apartment. The Fischer family lost everything they own in the fire. Now, they're working to get back on their feet.
"I got a phone call from our babysitter. He said that we need to rush home because our apartment's on fire and honest to god, I thought he was kidding," said Kelli Fischer.
Kelli Fischer and her husband got the terrifying call from their babysitter that their apartment on Viscount near Airway caught fire Friday night, with their 7-month-old son Jamerson inside.
"I was putting the baby to sleep in the back bedroom and I heard a pop. I thought it was kind of like a gunshot sounding noise," said Aaron Smith.
But it wasn't a gunshot. Smith said he saw large flames on the patio of the apartment and made a quick decision that saved their lives.
"I just decided to grab the baby, grab the dog… I ran out and maybe like a minute or two after I was out, it was all on fire," said Smith.
"I wanted to find the babysitter and my son and once I could find them and I could actually look at what was happening, it was terrifying," said Kelli Fischer.
Everyone at the apartment complex got out safely as well.
Even though the Fischer’s didn’t have insurance and said it will take years to recover, Jamerson Fischer said they still have a lot to be thankful for.
"Yeah we lost all our stuff but it doesn't matter, we can go get new stuff, but our son and our friends and everything else and everybody else in the building that they got out so quick and safe, are just a big blessing I think," said Jamerson Fischer.
