Dr. Michael Zolkoski, Ph. D. will announce his retirement from the Ysleta Independent School District at Wednesday's Board of Trustees meeting.

Dr. Zolkoski, who was once a finalist for the Texas Superintendent of the Year Award spent about four years with the district. His decision to retire is due to family health issues, YISD officials said.

“I have truly enjoyed my years at YISD, being part of the family that is Ysleta. Ysleta will always hold a special place in my heart because of the outstanding community, students and staff. I leave knowing that this is the best district I have ever had the privilege to lead, but it is time to focus on my family”.

During his tenure at YISD, the district was also named as a national Broad Prize finalist for two years in a row designating it as one of the top urban school districts in the nation. In addition, under his leadership YISD was rated as a TEA Recognized district in 2010 and 2011. Zolkoski is currently the Region 19 Superintendent of the Year.

Zolkoski has served as a superintendent for over 27 years in three states and has worked in education for over 42 years, according to YISD officials.
