ANTHONY, NM — It's was an emotional day in Anthony, New Mexico, where family and friends said their goodbyes to a young family that died in a car accident last Wednesday.
As family and friends walked into St. Anthony church on Friday, pictures reminded them of the good times they had with Andrew Valenzuela, Karla Diaz, their 2-year-old son Jaiden and their newborn baby girl.
All four were in a car when deputies said Valenzuela ran a stop sign and collided with a pickup truck on Westside Drive and Vinton Road.
"It's a shame that tragedies have to bring families together but I thank God that she's up there, and we're staying strong," said Karla's father Benjamin Diaz.
Karla's father said his daughter and grandson were full of life.
"Karla was energetic, peaceful, she never said anything bad about anybody... she loved her children and she loved being free, she loved her life," said Diaz. "Jaiden was a little fire, he would jump, run he was fearless."
Diaz said it's been a tough time for his family, especially because Karla's first child also died three years ago.
“We're a little busted up because we didn't lose one, we lost three," said Diaz. "I think she's up there with her little family of five, looking down on us."
Diaz said he believes God works in mysterious ways.
"He does things for a reason and surely there was a reason for this one, whatever it was, I accept it, we accept it," said Diaz.
Diaz said he's grateful to La Paz Funeral Home in Las Cruces and several families that helped pay the funeral costs. He said without their help, the funeral would have been a tremendous burden.
