EL PASO - The whole family is finding new ways to get into better health before school starts.
Dozens of guardians brought their kids so they can learn healthy habits and even took the time to get some immunizations and screenings for themselves too.
"We are doing diabetes screenings, blood pressure and checking the oxygen in the blood," Alex Romero of Anamarc College said.
Several non-profit organizations came to the event and handed out pamphlets and gave free health screenings for free.
"Unfortunately, diabetes and hypertension are very common among our Hispanic population. It's all in our genes and for that reason we are screening and we ant to make sure everyone is aware of what they have so we can detect it on time. We care about the health in our community. We want to make sure that whoever participates, that they're aware of their health," Romero said.
Maria Hernandez says she's grateful that she can get several tests done all in one sitting.
"This is better than going far away and spending money we don't have. Sometimes you may not have someone to take you to the doctor and the elderly people need to go more often, so this is a good thing," Hernandez said.
Hernandez says some people couldn't make it, but she and her family are taking care of them too.
"We took a lot of pamphlets to take them to our friends and family who didn't come, to help them," Hernandez said.
