A year ago, December 16, 2012, started out as any normal day would for Officer Angel Garcia. As a servant to the community, there are always inherent risks involved, and Officer Garcia knew this.  Garcia was called to a stretch of I-10 near Hawkins for assistance removing a ladder from the interstate when he was hit and killed by a car.

Monday, on the first anniversary of Officer Garcia's passing, the City, along with LJ & Associates Legal honors his memory by lighting the star on the mountain in his honor.

Jose Aguilar, with LJ & Associates Legal, and family member of Garcia said "While we, his family, miss him every minute of every single day, the holidays are particularly difficult. He will forever be in our hearts, our memory and in our lives. No parent should ever have to bury a child, but we were faced with such a loss and unimaginable pain. I can't imagine or fathom what my sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew have been through, and will continue to go through on a daily basis, every time they see his empty room."

Garcia was an Officer with the Mission Valley Regional Command, and Officers who knew Garcia said that he had wanted to be a police officer since the age of five.

Lt. Gabriel Lucero, with the El Paso Police Department told News Channel 9 last year that Garcia was "a gift from God, a good police officer, a beautiful person."

There have been a total of four El Paso Police Officers who have died in the line of duty within the last ten years, two of those, Officer Angel Garcia and Officer Jonathan Molina were killed in 2012, two months apart from each other.
