EPPD: SWAT situation over, traffic will resume in area

UPDATE: El Paso Police say that a man is in custody following a West-Central El Paso SWAT Situation Monday afternoon.

EPPD say that police were called to a welfare check at 1401 N. Mesa, when police arrived, the situation escalated, requiring SWAT to be called to the scene.

Police were able to take the man, only described as a black male in his 30s, into custody shortly after 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon, they will transport him for medical evaluation.

Traffic in the area is being reopened effective immediately.

Earlier: EPPD are on the scene of a SWAT situation in Central El Paso on Monday afternoon. Police appear to be surrounding an apartment building at the corner of Oregon and Cliff street.

Administration at El Paso Country Day School has confirmed that the school is on lockdown at this time, and the school's administration is monitoring the situation. Cathedral High School administration says that the school is currently not on lockdown, but they are actively monitoring the situation and all students are safe at this time.

At this time, North and South Oregon and North Mesa between Crosby and River are closed. Police are asking the public to avoid the area if at all possible.

Police has set up a staging area for the media at the corner of Cliff and El Paso Street, and a NewsChannel 9 crew is on the way to the scene at this time.
