EPPD officer accused of scuffle with bicyclists

A group of El Paso bicyclists are calling for an investigation after they say an off-duty El Paso police officer drove recklessly through their bike ride Friday night.

News Channel Nine has been told about 60 bicyclists gathered for a bike ride through downtown El Paso.

They reached a red light and some of the cyclists blocked an intersection to allow the rest of the cyclists through.

An off-duty El Paso police officer on a motorcycle questioned why they were blocking the road and asked for a permit.

The cyclists allege that officer was aggressive and revved his engine then drove through the group, nearly hitting some of the cyclists.

Officers took three people into custody, but the charges were later dropped.

Police say internal affairs is investigating.

Police have identified the off-duty officer involved as Jorge Gonzalez, who is accused in a 2010 shooting, also when he was off-duty.

Gonzalez was indicted for allegedly shooting a man in the neck after a crash.

It is important to know that Criticall Mass bike riders do ride on bike lanes and follow traffic signs.However to get to bike lanes they must ride through roads with no bike lanes. For safety they rely riding in large groups and do their best to stick together. It's better to hear this kind of story that that of someone being hit injured or killed while on their bike.
