EL PASO (KTSM) — A man is dead and another in police custody after an early morning pedestrian accident in East El Paso.
The accident happened on Lee Trevino and Doug Ford shortly after 2 a.m. Friday. EPPD officials identify the victim as 39-year old Victor Perez..
Police closed all southbound lanes of Lee Trevino from Pebble Hills to Doug Ford during their investigation.
Officials say the wreck happened just as The Tork Bar, located across the street, was closing for the night. Police said the driver and the victim were most likely leaving the bar.
According to witnesses the driver left the scene, but was seen back at the accident scene a short time later. Officers were seen questioning the driver and giving him a field sobriety test. They then handcuffed him and put him in a police car.
Police questioned several witnesses including a man who said he was nearby when it happened.
"I ran to try and help him. A lot of people ran out. Security guards ran out to try to help him and a lot of people started performing CPR and there was nothing they could do," said Aaron Magallanes. "Even if he had been going the speed limit, I don't think he would have been able to stop. I mean the guy was jaywalking in the middle of the street."
Magallanes also said the victim appeared drunk.
It's unclear where or what kind of car was involved, but police said it was in a "secure location."
