EPISD Under Federal Investigation - UPDATE

An audit and official investigation is underway by the U.S. Department of Education against the El Paso Independent School District.

Several high schools are part of the investigation - including Austin, Bowie, Coronado and Franklin.

During our investigation last month, students and school personnel told us that students were being pushed out of school. Texas State Senator Eliot Shapleigh has publicly accused the district of forcing out low performing students who would soon be taking the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test, also known as the TAKS test.

The number of students in the sophomore class of 2007 initially raised the concern of Senator Shapleigh's office which noted that less than half of the freshmen moved on to become sophomores that school year. The government measures a school's performance based on its sophomores' TAKS test scores.

The U.S. Department of Education is asking the E.P.I.S.D and Superintendent Dr. Lorenzo Garcia for an extensive list of records.

Those include:

An organization chart that identifies the individuals that make business decisions on behalf of high schools.

Written district school policies and procedures for TAKS and a district retention and promotion policy.

Name of individuals for each school district responsible for submitting student-level data to T.E.A.'s public education information management system.

Also on the list:

Funding sources for salaries, bonuses and pay increases for district administrators including, principals, and assistant principals for school years of 2006 though 2009.

Plus, graduation rates for all E.P.I.S.D. high schools for the past 10 years.

I love it!!! I a have been sick to my stomach as a dedicated teacher at the goings-on I have heard of in EPISD. FBI please leave no stone un-turned!!

Only the employees, the parents and the students that are involved know the truth! The employees are being harassed, threatened and intimidated into silence! No one knows how bad it is except these people. Anyone outside the District has NO idea how bad it is. It's not Shapleigh - he's trying to help those who came forward! We need to get him out and get someone from El Paso who knows what the heck they are doing instead of bleeding the community dry and hurting so many people!

bring it on ....Shapleighs daughter graduated from Coronado figure that one out...TEA already cleared them and the Govt is going to clear them as well...you can't hide kids...Shap is stupid and as ass

Of course schools can hide kids. Look at the numbers from 9th transitioning to 10th you don't have to be a rocket scientist to see it. Schools as re doing it, it's there in black and white!

LOOSERS!!!!!!!!!!

i believe they should not only investigate EPISD but the Canutillo school District as well as there is alot going on there too

why not you?????EPISD has done nothing wrong TEA has cleared them...Shap has it in for the Super and he's taking it out on the kids of the district

You don't refuse kids just because they don't speak English. Senator Shapleigh doesn't have it out for our kids, our district does. It's a sad reality.
