EL PASO - NewsChannel 9 has learned the El Paso Independent School District is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education and that a formal audit will begin December 13.
The nature of the probe may not surprise you.
NewsChannel 9 recently reported on allegations by students and school personnel that EPISD schools forced students out of school in order to raise overall TAKS scores.
The U.S. Department of Education is now raising the same question.
In our investigation, NewsChannel 9's Alexa Helms reported that students and one former employee told us students with lower grades were being pushed out to get higher TAKS scores.
Students at Bowie High School told us that Principal Dr. Jesus Chavez edged them out of school.
Even though the Texas Education Agency cleared the EPISD of wrongdoing two months ago, Senator Eliot Shapleigh (D)-El Paso said he believed students were being forced out because the principal was trying to raise dismal test scores.
We expect to know more as this story develops.
