EPISD Superintendent Juan Cabrera profiled

Wednesday, September 11, 2013 - 10:57pm

Juan Cabrera turned in his law books for school books, getting to a running start in his first few days as the El Paso Independent School District's superintendent.

He was once a school teacher in San Antonio and Austin, but left education to pursue a law degree.

When asked why, he simply said, "I had wanted to get an advanced degree, and I wanted to do it before I was 30."

Cabrera received his bachelor's degree in business, and hopes it will serve him now as E.P.I.S.D.'s superintendent.

"I think if you look at the operation of a school district, it's like a business but with a different ROI (return on investment)," said Cabrera. "Hopefully we do our part in helping raise young, engaged, educated adults that are college ready and career ready."

In the second half of our interview, Cabrera talks about regaining not only the trust of the public, but changing EPISD's image to help attract businesses to El Paso.
