EL PASO - Libraries in the El Paso Independent School District and its librarians are safe for now.
That reassurance came Tuesday night from trustees after wording on its agenda had many school libriarians worried their jobs may be at risk.
At the recommendation of the Texas Association of School Boards, trustees discussed the elimination of the state's policy on requiring school libraries.
Dozens of the district's librarians showed up at district headquarters Tuesday, worried about their future.
But trustees assured them that a dozen other district policies on libraries protect them against losing their jobs.

"We appreciate the school board being so concerned and thoughtful about our interest in continuing to educate kids," EPHS Librarian Paige Parker said. "We feel like they set our minds at rest for this year."

Parker said the district's multi-million dollar budget shortfall does still put libraries and librarians at risk for the 2012-2013 school year.
