EL PASO - The El Paso Independent School District is considering huge jobs cuts in the wake of the state's looming budget deficit.
In a letter to staff, EPISD Superintendent Dr. Lorenzo Garcia said, "This could mean up to 1,000 jobs lost and would have an extreme negative effect on the achievements of our students."
State lawmakers are faced with a deficit estimated at $25 billion.
"I have now had the opportunity to review the first draft of the appropriations bill," said Garcia. "As it currently reads, the district would be required to make further reductions, 2-3 times that of the worst case scenario in our budget reduction plan."
