EL PASO - The El Paso Independent School District is considering huge jobs cuts in the wake of the state's looming budget deficit.

In a letter to staff, EPISD Superintendent Dr. Lorenzo Garcia said, "This could mean up to 1,000 jobs lost and would have an extreme negative effect on the achievements of our students."

State lawmakers are faced with a deficit estimated at $25 billion.

"I have now had the opportunity to review the first draft of the appropriations bill," said Garcia. "As it currently reads, the district would be required to make further reductions, 2-3 times that of the worst case scenario in our budget reduction plan."

I am a property owner, I DON'T have children in school ANYWHERE. We are the ones footing a good portion of the bill. Why not take a portion of the income tax of the parents that do have children in school (some refunds ranging a couple of thousand dollars), that don't pay property tax and apply it to that portion of education expenses. Also how about cutting the high pay saleries of those making this decision in lieu of cutting jobs? Some of these folks make in excess of $150,000.00 p/y.

Do not fault Dr. Garcia. This problem begins with the people of El Paso and ends with the state legislature. Nobody is willing to pay, yet everybody wants. Granted cuts are inevitable due to fiscal constraints, but we had a chance to fix a portion of it. Yes, your property tax would have gone up, but the kids would also have a teacher in a right sized room, football, cheerleading, ect.

Don't say you couldn't afford it either. How much is your monthly cell phone, cable, or sat TV?

If he get rid of that many teachers. Who is going to teach the students?....the administration?....is he going to get in the classroom and teach?.....this is Outrages...why wont he take a pay cut?

Dr Lorenzo Garcia is an embelishment of ENRON, when CEO's dumped millions of shares secretly then watching ENRON collapse before the world's eye. He is paid $296,000. a year: sounds like a CEO and not a school superintendant. EPISD should not be another ENRON. Fire Dr Garcia NOW

The first to go should be Lorenzo with a 200k plus salary. Then EPISD should be looking to hire somebody from El Paso. The people of El Paso should have a voice in the hiring of the School Officials. El Pasoans paid property taxes not the outsiders. We need democracy in the hiring not an authoritarian person that dictates what is good and what is bad?

Quit providing public housing, welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, education, and free lunch to Illegal immigrants. This would free up a ton of cash for El Paso!

Start with the administration. Don't try any scare tactics in order to pass a bond. It will be rejected again.

They should start with Lorenzo Garcia's paycheck, he is way over paid!!!!

He shouldn't be making 300,000 a year, are you kidding me!!!

hello he makes 200,000 and he's the lowest paid in Texas....

and how much is he paying towards the district?

ATTN: STATE LAWMAKERS

Throw out all the illegals from Mexico and that will take care of a lot of the deficits!

Something so simple to take care of and you make it so hard. Take care of your OWN!
