The El Paso Independent School District Board of Trustees will appeal the Texas Education Agency’s decision to strip them of their powers and appoint a board of managers and conservator to oversee the district amid a cheating scandal investigation.

At the end of the seven and a half hour board meeting Tuesday night, trustees voted to request the TEA review the appointment of the board of managers and conservator.
The board will also submit comments to the Department of Justice, which has to approve the new board before it can take power.
Before the vote, each board member voiced their concerns about TEA Commissioner Michael Williams’ decision.
They said he took away the rights of the voters in El Paso when he appointed the board of managers.
Some said he could have waited until the school board election in May and let the voters decide if they wanted to keep the four board members up for re-election.
Board President Isela Castañon-Williams read a statement to the media after the board announced their decision.
Castañon-Williams declined to take questions.
Last Thursday, Texas Commissioner of Education Williams appointed Ed Archuleta, the CEO of El Paso Water Utilities, The Honorable Dee Margo, current TEA monitor Dr. Castleberry, and Carmen Arrieta-Candelaria, CFO for El Paso, to oversee the district.

A fifth member will be selected based on suggestions made by Senator Jose Rodriguez.
