EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Texas Education Agency has received approval from the Department of Justice to replace the EPISD Board of Trustees with a new Board of Managers in the wake of the District's cheating scandal.
At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, EPISD Interim Superintendent Vernon Butler said the new Board of Managers will be sworn in on May 7th at 5pm at the EPISD headquarters. At that time, the new board will hold their first meeting, elect officers, set meeting dates, and begin their search for a new superintendent. Most importantly, they will begin preparing a budget.
The new board will include former State Rep Dee Margo, Blanca Enriquez, who runs Region 19's Head Start program, and Ed Archuleta, the retiring CEO of El Paso Water Utilities. The other two members are Carmen Arrieta-Candelaria, Chief Financial Officer for the City of El Paso, and Judy Castleberry, the TEA Monitor currently assigned to the District.
Monday night, former school board president Isela Castañon-Williams expressed her disappointment with the decision. In the past, she's argued that the Board of Trustees did everything in its power to meet TEA's requirements while on probation.
Butler said although his experience working with the former Board of Trustees was positive, it's important for EPISD to focus on moving ahead.
"I don't think anybody is ever going to be prepared. You know, it's a new experience. But, I'm looking forward to working with them and I think they've got the right attitude," said Butler.
"I'm not going to complain about the Trustees as it stands now. The problem is that things occurred on their watch, and I think a change is necessary to kind of, start over and start fresh. We're here, we're ready, willing, and able once we're formally sworn in," said former State Rep Dee Margo.
Butler said the District is now working on the agenda for that meeting next week.
