EPFD Search and Rescue Crews Help Family of 5 Lost in the Franklin Mountains

Tuesday, October 9, 2012 - 6:44am

The El Paso Fire Department Combined Search and Rescue safely located a family of five that got lost while hiking in the Franklin Mountains.

According to EPFD officials, two adults, three children and two dogs set out on the hike around 3:00 p.m. Monday afternoon, but did not call for help until shortly after 2:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.  They started on the Northeast side of the mountain, and hiked west until they reached an area south of an area known as Smuggler's Pass.

The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted with air support, and their helicopter held a spotlight on the family while crews made their way through the dark mountains to reach the family.

The hikers were not injured.  They said they got lost while hiking, and it was too dark to make it back down the trail safely.

Search and Rescue crews reached the family around 7:00 a.m. and immediately hydrated them and helped them get warm.

No one was injured and the family was able to walk down the mountain.
