Fire Officials Kick Off Fire Prevention Week

One-third of American households believe they have at least six to 10 minutes before a fire in their home would become life threatening, according to the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association. The time available however, is often less.

The El Paso Fire Department is teaming up with NFPA during Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13 to urge residents to "Have Two Ways Out!," focusing on the importance of fire escape planning and practice.

"Fire is unpredictable and spreads faster than most people realize. Having an escape plan and practicing it is essential to ensuring your family's safety should fire break out in your home," says Calvin Shanks, Fire Marshal of the El Paso Fire Department.

The El Paso Fire Department recommends the following tips for planning your family's escape:
· Make a map of your home. Mark a door and a window that can be used to get out of every room.
· Choose a meeting place outside in front of your home. This is where everyone can meet once they've escaped. Draw a picture of your outside meeting place on your escape plan.
· Write the emergency telephone number for the fire department on your escape plan.
· Sound the smoke alarm and practice your escape plan with everyone living in your home while everyone is sleeping.
· Keep your escape plan on the refrigerator and have your family practice the plan twice a year or whenever anyone in your home celebrates a birthday.

The El Paso Fire Department will be hosting an Open House Fire Prevention event to promote "Have Two Ways Out!" on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents can stop by any fire station in El Paso and learn more about the importance of fire escape planning and practice, sign-up for a free smoke alarm and learn more about prevention.
