EPE: Recent power outages not because of the heat
El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — El Paso has seen several small power outages over the past several days, but El Paso Electric insists they have nothing to do with the heat.
On Thursday 2600 homes and businesses lost power for about an hour on the west side. EPE says equipment failure is to blame and says that's been the case with several other small outages this week.
"They're not rolling outages or blackouts. A lot of this is normal as we have our peak demand what happens is equipment needs to be replaced. One year it could be optimal and then maybe this year it needs to be replaced. It's just normal we do this," explained Eddie Gutierrez with El Paso Electric.
Gutierrez adds the city has not experienced a spike in outages this week. This is similar to what EPE sees in other months. However, he says recent outages have been more noticeable because some residents have had to forgo air conditioning in this extreme heat.
