Sample Ballots: New Mexico voters head to polls Tuesday

Voters in the state of New Mexico will head to the polls on Tuesday to decide who the candidates for multiple state elections will be, along with several local races being decided.

The Dona Ana County Elections Office has compiled a list of statewide races that will be decided on Tuesday, along with their function, so that voters may decide the best candidate:

  • United States Senator – Makes and passes federal laws.
  • United States Representative –Makes and passes federal laws.
  • Governor—Represents the state both nationally and internationally, appoints members of the board and commissions, and approves statutes enacted by the Legislature.
  • Lieutenant Governor—Serves as President of NM Senate, acting Governor in cases when the governor is out of state, by providing constituent services, and by serving as a member on several boards, councils, and commissions.
  • Secretary of State—The Secretary of State is the keeper of the Great Seal of the State of New Mexico, and affixes the seal to all commissions issued in the name of the state and signed by the Governor. The Secretary of State is also the chief election official in the state.
  • State Auditor –Protects tax payer funds by holding state agencies accountable through the audit process.
  • State Treasure—Acts as the state’s bank and records the receipt and disbursement of all states moneys defined by statues as being in the custody of or payable to State Treasurer.
  • Attorney General – Functions as the state’s chief legal officer, legal counsel to state government, consumer advocate, and guardian of the public interest. Also serves as head of the states Department of Justice.
  • Commissioner of Public Lands—Seeks to optimize revenues whiles protecting the health of the land for future generations.
  • Public Regulation Commission— Regulates the utilities, telecommunications, and motor carrier industries to ensure fair and reasonable rates, and to assure reasonable and adequate services to public as provided by law.
  • State House of Representatives--- Writes budgets and crafts laws pertaining to schools, prisons and governmental agencies.
  • Probate Judge—Oversees probate which is the judicial process for transferring the property for a person who has died.
  • County Sheriff—The chief law enforcement agent in the county. The department responds to all public assistance calls, ranging from felony crimes and lost children to traffic control and civil disputes.
  • Magistrate Judges--- Oversees the legal process and ensures that court rules and proceedings are adhered to.
  • County Assessors— Determines the property value of homes, businesses and other taxable properties within county for ad valorem tax purposes. Prepares the tax rolls for the county treasures for real property, personal property, live stock and mobile homes.
  • County Commissioners---Authorized and required to make policy for the county. Other duties may include negotiating contracts with labor unions and vendors.
