Dorris Hamilton was at home getting ready for church when she heard screams coming from the house next door.
“I hear this cry and this plea for help," recalls Hamilton.
The screams were coming from her neighbor's back yard.
She knew right away that something was terribly wrong.
“I knew somebody was in the pool because she was crying out for help."
That's when Hamilton's adrenaline kicked in.
She ran outside to her backyard and climbed over a four foot cement wall to get to her neighbor's pool.
“It's quite a wall but I managed to do it," Hamilton says.
But when she got to the pool, no one was in it.
There was only a trail of water leading inside the house.
The next thing she remembers, police and paramedics showed up and took the toddler to the hospital.
Hamilton says it's a scene she'll never forget, “I saw the child in his arms. He wasn't moving or breathing. I thought, God, please be able to resuscitate him. I like the people over there and I didn't want that to happen to them. So I just prayed."
The boy died at the hospital.
Police are now trying to figure out how he drowned.
Hamilton says she wishes she could have done more to try and save his life.
She hopes this story serves as a lesson for others so it won't happen again.
