El Paso, TX (KTSM) — El Paso's City Manager has decided to stay. Joyce Wilson is no longer a candidate for the County Manager position in Lee County, Florida. El Paso City officials said this is a good thing that will allow for a smooth transition while they look for someone to replace her at the end of her term.
City officials told us they are pleased she has agreed to stay after they had asked her to stay. However, Lee County officials claimed the reason she didn't take the job with them is because she was asking for $60,000 more than what they were able to pay her.
"I can tell you from my perspective that I was extremely concerned that the fact that she might be leaving ," Mayor John Cook said. The concern has turned into relief after officials say Wilson agreed to stay on as City Manager.
"I was very pleased that we came to terms that we can go forward and continue to finish all the projects and have a smooth transition when she does leave," Mayor-Elect Oscar Leeser told reporters. Leeser said if Wilson had left it would have cost the city a lot of money. ""We may have had to start over."
He claimed he asked her to stay to see some projects through, including the Triple-A Baseball stadium. "We are really, really happy that she cares enough about our community to stay and make sure that what she did start gets finished and gets finished in a proper manner," Leeser said.
Although in the past she was asking for a $12,000 raise on top of her $239,000 a year salary. "Nothing was discussed, zero," Leeser explained.
The Mayor-Elect said she'll stay on as City Manager at the same price. "She has discussed with us that her contract will expire for next year and she's only staying through the expiration of her contract," Leeser said.
Her contract ends in September 2014. Mayor-Elect Oscar Leeser also said they may be looking for a City Manager either locally or nationally within six months.
