El Paso woman celebrates 107th birthday
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — An El Paso woman is celebrating a huge milestone, something most of us can only dream of achieving. Maria Guadalupe Muñoz turned 107 years old today. She may very well be El Paso's oldest resident.
Maria Guadalupe Muñoz may not have the memory she once did, but she does know one thing. She never thought she'd live to be this old.
"Oh no," she said, with a chuckle.
So what's the secret to such a long life? According to Muñoz, it's exercise and a good diet.
"She's always been a healthy eater," said Alice Carrillo, her granddaughter.
Maria has always measured everything she eats, but that doesn't mean she doesn't enjoy her sweets.
"Every evening she has to have her sweet bread and cookies, or sweetbread, and she used to like soda," said her great granddaughter Melissa Vega.
Maria was born in Mexico 1906, moved to El Paso when she was 48, and until just six months ago, lived alone. She never married, raising three kids all on her own.
"She's always been a strong person. The rock of our family," said Carrillo.
And that family is a big one: 3 kids, 12 grandkids, 21 great grandchildren, and 16 great, great grandchildren. Not bad for a woman who never expected to live this long.
"I remember when she turned 100 I said, grandma, you're as old as Bob Hope and she was like, you and your Bob Hope, and now she's 107. She didn't think she'd live that long," said Vega.
It's a remarkable feat for a remarkable woman, as five generations gather to celebrate a woman still going strong.
