City Of El Paso's Water Supply Short By Millions Of Gallons

EL PASO - Due to continued severe water shortage, El Paso Water Utilities extends its 24-hour water restriction until further notice.

EPWU instituted restrictions Saturday, urging neighbors to not wash cars, dishes, clothes, or shower.

EPWU spokeswoman Christina Montoya advised people to boil their tap water before consumption.

"This is a precautionary measure because low water levels in the reservoirs and broken pipes on private properties can lead to possible contamination in the water supply," she said.

Montoya said EPWU crews are working non-stop to repair and monitor the water system.

"On a normal winter day, EPWU pumps 71 million gallons per day into the distribution system, and yesterday about 115 gallons were pumped into the system," Montoya said.

"The water system is still recovering from the freezing temperatures that caused damage to our facilities, and the rolling blackouts that EPWU participated in to conserve electricity," she added.

The agency said it would update the community on the water emergency throughout the day, so look for updates on ktsm.com and on NewsChannel 9.

CAN ANYBODY PLEASE TELL ME IF WE HAVE SCHOOL TOMORROW(EPCC)? I HAVE NOT HAD A SHOWER IN 2 DAYS!!! I AM RUNNING OUT OF BABYWIPES!!!SO I HOPE THERES IS NO SCHOOL WE STILL NEED TO SAFE WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!! COME ON EL PASO PLEASE CONSERVE WATER WE NEED TO GO BACK TO WORK & SCHOOL

is there going to be school on tuesday??

Is Horizon City part of all of this...we have our own aquifer and separate water utility company...but the news doesn't ever seem to mention the city out in the sticks...

day cares should also close because if kids are not in school, parents will take them to daycare.

OK I guess I picked a wrong state to go to from overseas. Dam I thought Iraq was a third world country. I do agree why should the restaurants be opened? They use more. My kids need showers and my family needs water, they dont need a double meat with cheese and fries. Heck, maybe by shutting down the fast food joints we might help the rest of El paso with the overweight problem too.

El Paso will be a third world country when there is a food shortage and thousands of people who are dying from the effects of poor quality living. This whole thing pisses me off too... but what are El Pasoans going to do to change things? After the talking who is going to push for justice? Somebody.. Anybody.. Speak up!

El Paso Electric needs to curtail their FALSE ADVERTISING of the last several years. SPECIFICALLY THE SPOTS WHERE YOU SUCCESSFULLY HANDLE A SEVERE WEATHER SCENARIO!!! IN THE LIGHT OF THE LAST WEEK, THAT RADIO AD IS MISLEADING AND FALSE--TO SAY THE LEAST!!!! GET A GRIP EL PASO ELECTRIC!!!!

Yes, EP Electric and EPW were ill prepared. But, in order to prepare for the next time, who do you think is really going to foot that bill? THE RESIDENTS OF EL PASO, THATS WHO. You can bet our rates will go up so their profits don't suffer. I agree with one of the other posts; restaurants need to shut down or at minimum restrict their hours of operation if we are in bad shape. Don't expect just the residential housing to be the one to suffer. We don't need to eat out - that's a luxury.

In the spectrum of emergency severity, this week's Arctic Blast was about 2.60 on 10 point scale. What if this had been a 7 level emergency?? If El Paso Elec and EPWU can not handle a "2.6 emergency" imagine what would have happened if it was worse? In emergency environment, responsible utilities need to be SUBSTANTIALLY more robust, & PART OF THE SOLUTION, instead of adding to problem!! Someone wrote they knew about the Arctic blast a week before. No way!-Neither has in-house meteorology dept!

EVERYBODY who lives in El Paso, ESPECIALLY EL PASO ELECTRIC ANS EPWU, etc., needs to read the book "Emergency" by Neil Strauss. WAKE UP EL PASO UTILITIES!!!! WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! El Paso Electric and EPWU, HAVE YOU LEARNED ANY LESSONS?? If not now, when? If not you, who?? HUH???!!!

It's not the water utility who is to blame. It's the El Paso Electric Company. They made a profit of 66 million dollars and couldn't give employees over-time to prepare for this winter storm? I will not buy their excuse of "not knowing" ..cause we ALL knew.. it was on the news for days before the artic storm hit. How much of that 66 million dollar profit would it have cost for some INSULATION or something to protect the generators.. so we wouldn't have this water problem?

I just came from Juarez and for those who think that they are having a great time over there, well they are wrose off that us poor americans. No water for over 3 to 4 days power lost on most parts of the city the only difference is that they are not crying as much as we are because we are so spoiled. So unless you have all the facts quit acting like mommy's cry baby......

Even after our water and electricity shutdowns, I already know the city commission will still fight against panels for harnessing solar energy in El Paso, because they (city commission) are so backazzwards!!

at a school in ysleta that I know of, there is no heater. The students are being dispersed into cafeteria, gym, library, or wherever else they can think of... but hey make sure you pay your property taxes... the school needs their money. The superintendent only makes about 280,000 a year plus the etras!

Everyone should turn there water on and let it run until Ed Archuleta is FIRIED! He has been on the Golden Pay plan with the city of El Paso for to long! He is the highest paid water manager in the State of Texas! El Paso wake up and quit being taken advantage of! TURN YOUR WATER ON!

I think you are just plain stupid, that would only send us into a water crisis. It's because of people that think like you that our world does not run smoothly. I sure wouldn't like to suffer the consequences of such a totally ridiculous act. What's more I wouldn't want our kids to pay for it. Stop being so childish and if you can't deal with a crisis and control your mood because things don't always go as expected, I feel so sorry for you.

LaurenKFOX14 RIGHT NOW, El Paso is pumping 40 million gallons MORE than normal. Pipes bursting could be cause- but also people rushing to use appliances

Dang! Come on we have to work together to conserve because if not we r screwed! Then we can blame ourselves!

Shame on El Paso for hurting us. You wonder why we always come in FIRST on the bad things, well, now we know! Get your act together, make the necessary demotions and let's get our city back to it's crappy normal self.

Im sure we are not the only city or state that is having water, gas, or electric problems... So for all those that just complain and dont really watch the news around the country stop talking its getting annoying. As far as being a third world country goes, thats probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

No electricity, no water, no gas; I would define thatt as a third world country. You are correct other states are having the same problem. My point exactly. I believe you need to realize our state tried to buy power from mexico. Our fellow tnhird world country. Truth hurts doesn't It!

Restaurants (fast food included), car washes & laundromats should be the primary closures when there is a water shortage due to the highest usage of water. Next, school should be cancelled to conserve utilities. Residential water usage should be set at higher restrictions, but not such that are currently in place.
If I wanted to "Go back to Basics" for that outdoorsy camping vibe, I'd pack the tent & gear and drive out to the Gilas.

I bet Juarez has better water than us right now.

Water restriction? Are you kidding ? Our area has not had water all day , not a restriction but a total cutoff. I am sure they will expect their check in the mail as though they didnt screw up. How about closing the restraunts instead of forcing the general public to go without water for our kids, or bathing. My wife is at the grocery store right now buying water because we need it for formula. Thanks EPWS. The entire city has screwed up in the storm and nothing will be done for the public

They have an excuse for everything. I'm beginning to hate El Paso. But the minute your late with your payment to the gas, water, or light company there ready to shut you off like that. Passing the blame on to everyone else except themselves.

Ok there are standards for all utilities. Why aren't there back up generators for EP water facilities. Large pipes and flowing water do not freeze in a couple of days. Obviously there isn't any back up or redundancy for any of our utilities. Lack of planing and greed does not constitute and emergency on the communities part. El Paso we weren't blindsided by this storm we were let down by our utilities.

so will there be school tomorrow?

It's amazing at the greed of YISD to send the kids to school under a mandatory water restriction. Their website advises to send your kids bundled up. With no heat or water to proper care for and feed our children. I'm disgusted!

Check the YISD website, they will not have school tomorrow due to water restrictions.

The headline should read, "We are officially now a third world COUNTRY!"

You got that right. We are now officially a third world "COUNTRY"
