EL PASO - El Paso's ranking as the safest city in the United States is being called bogus at best by the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

The group calls the rankings by CQ Press "a premeditated statistical mugging of America's cities."

"These rankings represent a gross misuse of FBI data," said Houston Mayor Annise Parker, Chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Criminal and Social Justice Committee.  "Everyone with the slightest knowledge of this issue knows the rankings are not credible.  The FBI, U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Society of Criminology all considered them bogus and damaging."

Crime experts say the rankings are unreliable because cities that are smaller do not include as many middle class areas as larger cities and arbitrarily get penalized.  Also, cities differ in the degree to which citizens report crimes. Reporting systems vary from city to city and may unduly influence "safest city" rankings.

laracy nothing to be jealous of , it has nothing to offer not even companies come here . This is a welfare town and they only taxing the home owners. If you call it safe it not. The Macho attitude in this town beats women daily and even kills family members give me a break.Everytime I open news it domestic violence and illegal activity going on. Except one thing here people cover up for each other when illegal stuff goes on . They wont even report illegal things or dishonesty at there work.

I agree El Paso is not Safe. You come here from another State and see what we have to say about the corruption in El Paso Texas, not only in the police department everywhere. Even working here there nothing but dishonest employers who treat there employees like dirt and they hire there freinds. It a city of no respect. You even have to go to New Mexico to shop because these people here throw clothes on the floor and step on it .Everyday there domestic violence. It not a safe city it corrupted

I have lived in El Paso for 23 years and I have to say that I have never felt safer. I guess it also depends on who your hanging with too because I know many of my old friends have fallen pray to that and it wasnt so safe. I have never been mugged or robbed or kidnapped and I have lived in the poorest parts as well as the richest. El Paso is an amazing place. Try living in the small towns of MN, then tell me what you think of El Paso!

El Paso IS unsafe. I grew up and lived most of my life in El Paso and the fact that it is very dangerous is one of the reasons I moved my family and myself out of there. I didn't want my children to see all that crime nor did I want them to see all the trash people commiting those crimes. Besides, all I ever see on NBC World News are the drug wars and El Paso is always mentioned. You may love El Paso but it doesn't mean you have to lie and say it's safe when deep down you know it isn't.

I can tell you why El Paso is the safest city. We don't put up with BS. Here's what I created and installed on my front gate (copywrite is mine).

"Legal Notice
Do Not Approach Gate.
Do Not Knock.
We Won't Answer.
We Kill Intruders.
We Will Kill You.
Texas Law
Deadly force against unlawful entry.
Deadly force to protect property."

Back in the 80s when crime rose, people shot criminals with impunity. Many criminals left ElPaso.

I left El Paso this summer after I saw at least three kidnappings and various other attempted kidnappings. So i agree with this report. Plus many of the top cartel leaders now live in Coronado Country Club, and Rim Road. If you want to keep being blind, go ahaead, but let us face the most corrupt police department is not in Juarez it is in El Paso. Wht else would they always say that the El Pasoans found murdered in Juarez were kidnapped in Juarez, and not kidnapped in El Paso as they were.

thats not true about the police department, becareful what u hear or do more homework. by the way who do you still call when you need help? the soooo"corrupt" police department? i have lived in el paso for 40 years i have never seen a kidnapping, i wonder who ur hanging with?

I lived on Rim road, there were two people who owned businesses in Juarez. One had a Pharmacy it happened in Country Club road in west El Paso. I was born in El Paso myself, cameback to El Paso after 5 years in the U.S. Army and finished at A.S.U. After that went to UTEP, finished there and moved to Phoenix after personally seeing the attempted kidnappings and seen first hand the kidnapping of people. Don't have enough space for the rest of the story.

Jealous much?

Remember that police are human and mistakes can be made, but they still are keeping El Pasoans safe, give them a well deserved thank you every day!

El Paso is the safest city due to the FINEST POLICE DEPARTMENT in the NATION. The EPPD are
faced with the worst of the worst every day, their lives on the line for us, and El Paso has benefited!

I've heard of "green cities" before, I think these other cities are green with envy. I've lived in El Paso for over 40 years and have always felt very safe here.

Sounds like sour grapes, huh? Why all of a sudden because El Paso, Texas is being recognized do the nasty comments start flying? Sheer jealousy, I say!
