EL PASO— The city has recorded its 9th traffic fatality of the year after an El Paso man died from his injuries after a crash early Saturday morning.

Ricardo Morales, 23, of the 9400 block of Chantilly, died Monday from injuries he received in a traffic accident on Saturday.

The El Paso Police department's Special Traffic Investigation unit was called to the scene at 1500 N. Zaragoza at Pellicano at 3:40 a.m. Saturday. Luis Belio was driving a 2000 gray Toyota Camry north on Zaragoza with four passengers— including two 13-year-olds and Morales. Belio swerved his car around another car that was stopped at the traffic light at the intersection of Zaragoza and Pellicano, and hit a 1996 green Pontiac Sunfire. Belio kept driving and drove over a raised curb and hit a boulder, causing the car to jump into the air. Belio's car hit a business sign, and Morales was ejected from the vehicle through the sun roof. The Camry came to a rest at the foot of the business sign and caught on fire. The driver of the first car Belio swerved around put out the fire in Belio's car. Morales and the two 13-year-olds were taken to Del Sol Medical Center.

The case is still being investigated.

Morales is the 9th traffic fatality of 2011 compared to three this time last year.
