The El Paso Police Department is launching a new program called "Alternative Reporting" and it means an officer won't necessarily come out every time you report a crime.

The new program allows people to call an operator to take the report, instead of having an actual Police Officer come out and take it.

The operator will ask you questions to determine whether an officer needs to see you. For issues like a minor car crash, certain minor theft cases, vandalism, or child-custody issues, the opeartor will take your report over the phone.

Police will then review your filed report and a detective will contact you if a follow up is necessary.

Alternative Reporters take calls Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 8 PM, and on Saturdays from 8 AM to 5 PM.

To file a report call: 832-4436.

Police say this new way of reporting will make sure officers are available to respond to major crimes.
