El Paso Police officer involved in car crash
El Paso, TX — An El Paso police car was involved in a car accident in Northeast El Paso Wednesday night.
The crash happened shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday evening near Rushing St. and Yvette St. According to emergency dispatchers, officers were responding to a fight in the area.
While on the scene of the domestic dispute, the responding Officers learned that some of the people involved in the fight had left the scene. While still at the home, two cars drove by the officer and were identified by witnesses as being involved in the fight.
The officer, 6-year- veteran Patrol Officer Luis Granillo returned to his police unit and began to follow the cars. While traveling north along the 9800 block of Rushing, a 1999 Dodge Durango driven by a 23-year-old man made an illegal u-turn in front of the patrol unit which led to the unit to hit the Durango and caused both of them to collide with a rock wall.
Both drivers were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. At this time, EPPD suspects alcohol to be a factor on behalf of the Durango's driver. EPPD is withholding the driver's identity until any possible charges are filed.
EPPD says that the officer was not in pursuit of the Durango at the time of the crash, and the emergency lights were not on. Speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
