Lorraine Merjill faces 5 to 99 years in prison
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — A jury convicted an El Paso mother of injury to a child. As the verdict was read, 23-year-old Lorraine Merjill broke down in tears. Merjill was facing three counts, capital murder, murder, and injury to a child.
The jury came back with the guilty charge of injury to a child. As we've reported, Lorraine Merjill's daughter, Desiree, died from blunt force trauma on July 30, 2011. Defense attorneys have argued that Merjill's boyfriend, Jorge Sanchez is the one who killed the 20-month-old, not Lorraine. Merjill has pleaded not guilty.
Her family was very emotional after the verdict was read. Her father shared his thoughts with us. "Well I was very scared at first. But I was always confident that my daughter was telling the truth. I know my daughter. So, I know sooner or later, we will know the truth and she will be able to walk out there again," Carlos Perez said.
Other family members declined to speak with us on camera. However, Lorrain Merjill's attorney did share his thoughts just moments after the verdict was handed down.
"We don't always agree with the verdict but we definitely had to respect what the jury had to say. It was a very trying week on the jury, on the attorneys. And most importantly, it was very trying for Lorraine this week," Attorney Omar Carmona stated.
The sentencing phase of the trial takes place on Monday at 9 AM. Merjill faces five to 99 years in prison.
