CENTRAL EL PASO — An El Paso man was sent to the hospital after being shot by a police officer.
The El Paso Police Department says the incident happened after 1 a.m. Sunday in Central El Paso.
El Paso police say a woman from inside of the home called 9-1-1 claiming a man was causing a disturbance.
Police say the officer asked the man multiple times to drop a knife he was holding, but the man refused.
Eventually the officer ended up shooting at the suspect.
El Paso police say officers do not go out to a scene with an intention to shoot somebody, but certain situations require an officer to protect themselves.
"An officers right to defend himself is no different than any other citizen, so of course we would have preferred that the individual would have dropped the knife. However, he made the decision to continue his assault on the officer with that knife,” said Mike Baranyay with The El Paso Police Dept.
The suspect who is only being described as a Hispanic male in his 30's is expected to live. He was transported to University Medical Center in critical, but stable condition.
The officer who shot the suspect has been place on administrative duty while the department investigates the shooting.
The Texas Rangers are also conducting their own separate investigation.
