EL PASO (KTSM) — It’s the start of the tax-free weekend in Texas. Shoppers have the opportunity to buy back-to-school necessities without paying the sales tax.
"It helps yeah. It's a little bit. Every little bit helps," said Erica Menchaca.
Parents said they like to take advantage of the yearly three-day tax-free weekend.
"Yes it helps. It's a lot that we pay for tax," said Carmen Real-Vasquez.
Stores will cut the state and local taxes from school supplies, backpacks, most footwear and clothing less than $100. It adds up to about $8 for every $100 spent.
Menchaca said she'll shop early in the morning to avoid the rush.
"I don't really think it's worth it. It's not worth it to me to fight the crowds to save $5 to $6 here and there," said Menchaca.
Sunland Park and Cielo Vista Malls said the back-to-school season is the busiest time of the year, behind the holidays.
"We expect lots of people, lots of traffic because again it's a busy time; it's a busy season for us," said Cindy Foght.
But still, they encourage everyone to shop this weekend.
"They can take advantage of the three-day period and not only save on the regular sales and promotions that the retailers have going on but also take advantage of the savings for the tax," said Foght.\
Sunland Park and Cielo Vista Malls are extending their hours this weekend. On Friday and Saturday, they'll be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The tax-free weekend ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
