El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Thousands of job seekers are expected to attend El Paso's largest job fair and education expo on Tuesday, hosted by Workforce Solutions Upper Rio Grande.
Workforce Solutions said there are more than 6,000 positions available, and more than 250 employers are expected to attend.
"We have companies that are getting ready for the holiday season, so this is when a lot of the hiring decisions are being made," said Lorenzo Reyes, Jr. from Workforce Solutions.
Job seekers like Priscilla Sifuentes, who have long been looking for work, said they are looking forward to meeting with potential employers.
"We're actually struggling, but I know we can do it. And I'm willing to go tomorrow, and I'm keeping positive and I know I will get a job tomorrow," she said.
"Things are changing so quick, technology is getting better, people are becoming unemployed because things are automated," said Nicolas Flores.
Flores has spent the last 8 years working as an airplane mechanic in Waco, but said the industry is unstable.
Like other job seekers, he said would take whatever he can get.
"If I can have two, then that would be even better, but if it's part-time, that's what I’m looking for - either part-time or full-time," said Flores.
Workforce Solutions said many of the jobs being offered are part-time, and according to the U.S. Department of Labor, the number of people working part-time in the U.S. has grown 4 ½ times as fast as the number of full-time workers since the 1980's.
Dr. Tom Fullerton, an economics professor at UTEP said many employers shy away from hiring full-time so they don't have to foot a health insurance bill for their employees.
High school students are also encouraged to come to Tuesday’s fair for help with college applications, career advice, and finding a part-time job.
