A 61-year-old man from Northeast El Paso became the county's 16th 2009 H1N1 influenza-related fatality, the City of El Paso Department of Public Health reported today.

The man had underlying medical conditions and laboratory tests confirmed that he did have the H1N1 virus.

The Department of Public Health would like to reassure the public that is continuing its surveillance of influenza-like illnesses in El Paso County, and continues to work closely in partnership with health care providers, hospitals and other organizations to monitor the spread of the virus.

To prevent the spread of the flu, healthcare providers in El Paso County have ordered more than 600,000 H1N1 vaccine doses. The Department of Public Health ordered 27,000 vaccine doses and has filled more than 5,000 appointments over the past several weeks to get them out to area citizens.

The call center for those seeking to obtain the vaccine continues to operate this morning and call takers will continue to schedule appointments. Anyone interested can call (915) 771-5759 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today and Friday, or until the maximum number of appointments have been made.

For more information about the H1N1 Flu, the public may call 2-1-1 or log on to the city's website at www.elpasotexas.gov/health/h1n1.asp .
