El Paso, TX (KTSM) — El Paso County will retain control over whether or not they can sell fireworks. House Bills 3429, 3236, and 3557 were voted down recently in the state legislature.
As we've reported, County Commissioners took a stand against the bills weeks ago. If the bills were passed it would have allowed the state to control whether local fireworks industries could sell or not sell fireworks based on a drought index.
Judge Veronica Escobar told us this is good news for El Pasoans. "we want to have local control over whether we take safety to our hands or not. We don't want it decided in Austin. So that was part of the discussion today. And part of what I mentioned from the day is was I want the public and the industry to know that I am going to pursue banning fireworks again this year," Judge Veronica Escobar said.
Escobar says banning fireworks for this 4th of July is important because we are in drier conditions this year.
