Hundreds of El Pasoans gathered Monday night to celebrate the Jewish Passover.

The Word of Life Church in east El Paso was one of a handful of area Christian churches to celebrate the seder meal on the first night of Passover.

Passover lasts eight days and commemorates the exodus of the ancient Israelites from their slavery in Egypt.

Word of Life Bishop Tom Brown spoke of the celebration "One of the things that's so important for the Christian church to understand is our Jewish roots. When Jesus had the first communion it wasn't a Christian communion per se, it was a Jewish communion in which he brought himself into the scene and showed it was indeed a fulfillment of the new covenant."

The meal at Word of Life Church included most of the traditional foods typically served at a seder meal, from bitter herbs to matzoh.
