El Paso’s new Triple-A baseball team finally has a name. The El Paso Chihuahuas were unveiled yesterday with mixed reaction from El Pasoans, young and old.

Beginning late last night, the social media and website marketing teams began rolling out the Chihuahua’s media platforms. The Facebook page alone already had over 8,900 “likes” by Wednesday morning, compared with the nearly 6,400 who signed a petition on the popular petition website change.org to appeal to MountainStar Sports to change the name of the mascot. There were no specific suggestions on mascot alternatives from the change.org petition.

You can follow the El Paso Chihuahuas on their social media pages by following the links below.

If you’re still unconvinced, you can sign the petition to change the name at change.org.

Are you kidding me! "EL Paso Chihuahuas". That is so degrading and embarrassing! First they ram a baseball team down our throat without letting the great citizens of El Paso vote on it. Now they want to name the team after a nervous stereotypical dog (no offense to chihuahua owners)! Why couldn't they chose a name like "The El Paso Gators" that more represents the history of our city like the alligators from the placita. I hope the current name is not set in stone, but put under one!!

It is odd to me that in a City with so few voters and even fewer nice things that our citizens can get so furious over NOTHING. The Chihuahuas are are a great thing and as the dramatic few are gnashing teeth and wringing hands, the rest of us will be living fuller lives at the games and wondering where you are.
