When shoppers are looking for the best deals in town, department stores are normally the ones who can offer the lowest prices. That makes it hard for small businesses to compete. That's why many local shops are participating in "Small Business Saturday." This year, the City of El Paso has also jumped on the bandwagon.

Jessica Escalante knows that malls and department stores draw in the largest crowds during the holiday season. But like many other local store owners, she hopes participating in Small Business Saturday will push more people to spend their money here at home.

Jessica owns J.Luxe, a woman's clothing store on Cincinatti Street. She says her customers enjoy the wide variety of clothing and accessories the store offers, but they especially like the service.

The Downtown Artist Market also celebrated El Paso businesses today. Local artisans gathered in Union Plaza to sell items like purses, jewelry, and hand-crafted sculptures. The Artist Market's coordinator, Rebecca Muñoz says, the pieces sold today are certainly things you wouldn't find at a Walmart.

The Annual Small Business Saturday was created by American Express in 2010, with hopes to pump up mom and pop shops.

Many small businesses in El Paso, like J.Luxe Boutique, will also be participating in "Cyber Monday," which is a day when shops offer discounted prices on their online stores for those who like to shop from home.
