El Paso native and undefeated heavyweight boxer David Rodriguez is recovering at his home in Arizona after being stabbed Friday night in Scottsdale, AZ.

Rodriguez says he was outside a restaurant with friends when he was slashed in the face by an unknown assailant. The cut required over 100 stitches and began at his mouth and sliced along his jaw line to his ear.

NewsChannel 9 spoke with Rodriguez Monday about the attack.

"There was no altercation. It was honestly just like an ambush and it happened so fast I didn't have any kind of warning or preparation or anything," said Rodriguez via telephone. "One minute I'm standing there and the next minute I'm watching blood coming out of my face and losing consciousness."

The fighter called the attack a senseless act of violence and believes the attacker intended on killing him.

Rodriguez was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent a 4 hour surgery and doctors discovered the cut came within a half inch of the jugular vein.

No arrests have been made but an investigation is underway.

Rodriguez said he expects a full recovery and will return to ring sometime in the future.

Vago you idiot. The people who stabbed him were black and supposedly he started the whole thing by screaming racist insults at them when they asked him for a lighter.

There is something more to this story than we are being told. If they wanted to kill him it would have been a body shot or another slash across the neck. This was intended to mark him for some unknown reason. In any case, he needs to watch his back and keep an eye on those people he associates with. Get well soon.

First of all Scottsdale Arizona where this happened isn't really the picturesque place it once lay claim to be. Second alot of anti Mexican (Mex-American in this case), people live there, as well as anti Texan. Rodriguez being all of these risks being sorrounded by a bunch of envious haters that know he is there to surpass local Arizonians in both fame and fortune. This inno way surprises me that it did and can happen to anyone from EP over there.
