"El Grito" celebration at the UTEP campus

UTEP will present its annual “El Grito” celebration commemorating Mexico’s declaration of independence with a line-up of activities and speakers.

The ceremony will take place, Friday, 11:30am at the UTEP Union Plaza.

Director of Chicano Studies Dennis Bixler-Márquez, Ph.D., noted that UTEP’s grito ceremony stands out as one-of-a-kind among national celebrations by including a traditional Mexican drum and bugle corps.

The full schedule of events is as follows:

11:30 a.m. Live Mariachi Band

11:45  Welcome and Introductions by Casandra Reyes, SGA Liberal Arts Senator and master of ceremonies

11:50  Remarks by President Natalicio

11:55  Remarks by Ruben Chavez Paz, SGA Internal Vice President

Noon  Civic Ceremony led by Consul General Jacob Prado with the Banda de Guerra y Escolta from the Instituto Tecnológico de Ciudad Juárez

12:10 p.m. Himno Nacional Mexicano

12:15  Remarks by Fernanda Fiscal, Vision Mexico Vice President

12:20  Closing and acknowledgments

12:25  Refreshments and music
