Next time you go food shopping, you might want to think twice before you use a cart-- turns out, there may be E.coli there.
Researchers from the University of Arizona examined shopping cart handles in four states, looking for bacterial contamination. Of the 85 carts in the study, 72 percent turned out to have fecal bacteria.
Researchers also looked at the samples from 36 carts and found E.coli on 50 percent of them.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, E. coli is a “large and diverse group of bacteria.” The CDC says while most strains of the bacteria are harmless, others can make you sick. Some kinds of E.coli can cause diarrhea, while others cause urinary tract infections, and other illnesses.
